Learn About the Seed Recipients - Employment

“Usually nobody cares about the homemaker… it’s stressful because you have to do laundry, wash dishes, make sure the kids have clean clothes, make everything, make dinner. Get their appointments. The dentists, the doctors, the school appointments. Are they doing okay in school? My husband works hard and is home late. He can’t help. But we’re getting on track with bills. It’s like getting paid to be a homemaker.” — Anonymous SEED Recipient

Employment
$500 Group
Comparison Group
Demographic data are collected from people in Stockton whose addresses were randomly selected.
Selectees were randomly assigned to a treatment group that receives $500 per month, or to a comparison/control group that does not receive the money.
Demographic surveys are completed every six months, beginning December 2018.
How does this compare to the selected Census tracts of Stockton?
About 43% of people receiving the $500 reported their primary employment status as working full or part time.

Just over 55% of the population aged 16 or older is in the labor force in Stockton, yet the unemployment rate was only around 6% in August of 2019. Why? Many Stocktonians have to take care of aging parents or young children, have a disability that interferes with their ability to work, have retired from the labor force, or are students.

Why? The unemployment rate does not paint a full picture of the economy. For example, Stocktonians who are caretaking for aging parents or young children, have a disability that interferes with their ability to work, have retired from the labor force, or are students are not included.
